John McEntee Named a 2028 GOP Dark Horse as Republicans Target Young Voters


A former Trump White House aide is showing up in presidential forecasts — and the reason comes down to TikTok arithmetic.

A recent analysis by RealClearPolitics named John McEntee alongside Glenn Youngkin and Ted Cruz as a viable GOP hopeful in the 2028 primary. McEntee has never appeared on a ballot.

What he has is a TikTok account — @daterightstuff — with over 3 million followers, 2 billion views, and nearly 200 million likes. Those are numbers that exceed the digital reach of most politicians, Trump being the notable exception.

In an era when the Republican Party is struggling to hold onto younger voters, that kind of reach isn’t decorative. It’s strategic.

The polling data is stark. A January 2026 New York Times poll cited in the RealClearPolitics piece showed young voters’ support for Trump has dropped 34 points since the 2024 election. An Economist/YouGov survey conducted February 6–9 put Trump’s approval among voters aged 18 to 29 at just 25%, with 67% disapproving — down from 50% approval and 42% disapproval in February 2025. CBS News data shows Trump’s job approval among Gen Z has shifted from +10 percentage points in February 2025 to -32 points by mid-January of this year.

That trajectory points to a structural problem heading into the 2026 midterms, not a blip. And reportedly, a recent strategy meeting of Trump’s top aides at the White House didn’t even have the youth voter slide on the agenda.

Part of what makes the 2028 speculation credible is McEntee’s track record on TikTok itself. In 2023, when most Republicans were pushing to ban the platform, he called it a “ridiculous self-own” and told Business Insider, “Republicans are such nerds for even doing this… they were duped.”

That view was dismissed at the time. Two years later, it became the majority Republican position. Trump extended TikTok’s divestiture deadline rather than enforce the ban. And a January 2025 arXiv study confirmed the platform’s algorithm carried an 11.8% right-leaning bias during the 2024 presidential race. The platform Republicans most wanted to shut down turned out to be one of their most effective outreach tools — and McEntee had been building his audience on it the whole time. accounts in the world, a presence observers credit with contributing to the momentum around Trump’s landslide win.

RealClearPolitics analyst Jonathan Draeger was measured in his assessment. JD Vance leads 2028 primary polling by roughly 30 points, ahead of Donald Trump Jr. at 14.7%, Marco Rubio at 9.3%, and Ron DeSantis at 8.3%. Those numbers reflect name recognition more than settled preference, Draeger noted — and Trump has not named a successor, keeping the field genuinely open.

McEntee’s path from college quarterback at the University of Connecticut to Trump White House Director of Presidential Personnel to viral content creator doesn’t follow a traditional political arc. Most of his online followers have no idea he spent years at the highest levels of government. That gap between cultural reach and political résumé may actually be an asset with a generation skeptical of career politicians.

He also demonstrated real cultural influence while active — inspiring a wave of imitators who copied his format of delivering political commentary during meals, a reach that’s been documented in congressional testimony.

Trump’s 2016 run proved that traditional prerequisites for the presidency — party infrastructure, governing experience, conventional credibility — aren’t actually required if a candidate connects with voters in a way that the establishment can’t replicate. A candidate who built a political audience entirely through TikTok would represent the next version of that logic.

Whether John McEntee pursues office remains an open question. But the data behind his voter connection is real — and in American politics, that tends to matter more than a head start.
