On Tuesday, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Deb Haaland joined members of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) Albuquerque Local 380 during a national day of action picket aimed at protecting public post offices from privatization and political interference.
The American Postal Workers Union represents more than 200,000 United States Postal Service employees and retirees, advocating for fair wages, benefits, and safe working conditions.
The demonstration comes as postal workers and union leaders warn that proposals to privatize portions of the U.S. Postal Service and increase political influence over its operations could undermine a vital public institution. Organizers said the rally was intended to highlight the importance of maintaining a strong, publicly operated postal system that serves communities across the nation.
In New Mexico, where many rural communities depend heavily on mail service, post offices play a critical role in delivering prescription medications, essential goods, ballots, and other necessities. Union leaders argue that privatization could increase costs, reduce service, and disproportionately harm rural residents who already face limited access to essential services.
“Our postal service is one of our most trusted institutions that brings our country together and continues to provide reliable service at times that matter most,” said Haaland. “From sending a letter to loved ones, receiving your paycheck, or casting your ballot, our public post offices continue to keep our communities running. Essential services like sending and receiving mail should not see price increases due to privatization. Post offices are crucial community anchors that should be kept public.”
Haaland has consistently advocated for protecting postal services throughout her public career. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she stood alongside postal workers to defend mail service, criticized Postal Service operational changes that delayed deliveries—including Social Security checks—and supported federal funding for rural post offices while representing New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
