Who controls Indigenous knowledge when it enters the world of academic publishing and digital data?
On Friday, September 25, at 12 p.m. ET, Native Bidaské host Levi Rickert sits down with Dr. Lydia Jennings of Dartmouth College to discuss new guidelines for the governance of Indigenous peoples’ data in scholarly publishing.
Jennings helped lead a collaborative effort that brought together Indigenous scholars, allied scholars, journal editors and data and metadata experts to develop the guidelines. The guidelines center on the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance: Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility and Ethics.
In the conversation, Jennings explains how the principles can be applied throughout the scholarly publishing process, from recognizing Indigenous peoples’ rights and interests in data to strengthening relationships between researchers, publishers and Native nations.
She also discusses community and collective authorship, recognition of tribal affiliations, connecting published information back to communities, and the role publishers and editors can play in supporting Indigenous data governance. The guidelines also recommend using metadata to help communities identify research and publications connected to their nations and knowledge.
For Jennings, protecting Indigenous knowledge is especially important as technology creates new ways for information to be extracted and separated from the communities that steward it.
“Why should communities share information with the larger world if it’s not protected?” Jennings asks.
