Red Lake Nation Man Charged with Sexual Abuse of a Minor Following BIA Takeover of Tribe’s Family and Children’s Services
Courtney John Barrett Sr., 56, of Red Lake, had been charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
The charges stem from an investigation by the FBI and the Red Lake Police Department.
According to a press release from the office of United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen, Barrett Sr., 56, of Red Lake, had his initial appearance hearing on Sept. 22 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jon T. Huseby.
According to the indictment, Barrett knowingly engaged and attempted to engage in a sexual act with a minor victim on at least two occasions from on or about June 2023 to February 2025. The victim was between the ages of 12 and 16 years old.
Assistant United States Attorney Dana Joseph is prosecuting the case.
On Sept. 14, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) took over operations of Ombimindwaa Gidinawemaaganinaadog, formerly known as Red Lake Family and Children’s Services. The takeover followed a federal search warrant executed just days earlier on Sept. 10.
