Mo Brings Plenty Expands Role on CBS’ Marshals to Help Ensure Authentic Native Representation

Posted on

Mo Brings Plenty’s transition from Yellowstone to CBS’ Marshals has given him a greater opportunity to shape how Native people, cultures and traditions are portrayed on television.

Brings Plenty’s trademark cowboy hat and braids reflect his pride in his Lakota culture and heritage. Born in Porcupine on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, he grew up connected to Lakota traditions, including drumming and singing.

Tribal members approach Rainwater with concerns about potential military testing and seek his approval to cultivate cannabis on the reservation.

That cultural knowledge has helped expand his role beyond acting. On Marshals, Brings Plenty also serves as the American Indian Affairs Consultant, helping ensure that Native traditions, cultural practices and tribal experiences are portrayed with authenticity and accuracy. His expanded role represents an important step toward meaningful Indigenous representation — one in which Native voices help shape not only the characters audiences see on screen, but also the stories being told.

In an October 2026 interview with TV Insider, Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, the lead character in the series, described how Brings Plenty’s involvement shapes scenes involving Indigenous traditions.

For a traditional smudging ceremony featured in Season 2, Episode 2, the writers consulted Brings Plenty about what should be said and how the ceremony should be conducted. Grimes said Brings Plenty takes charge of scenes like these, helping the production get the details right.
