Crystalyne Curley, speaker of the 25th Navajo Nation Council, has formally announced her candidacy for president of the Navajo Nation, entering an already crowded race that now includes 16 candidates.
Curley will challenge incumbent President Buu Nygren, who is seeking a second term. Other prominent candidates include former Navajo Nation vice presidents Frank Dayish Jr. and Myron Lizer.
The full slate of candidates also includes Justin Jones, Kevin L. Cody, Jordan Begay, Arvin Trujillo, Debbie Nez-Manuel, Tom T. Chee, Donovan Begay, Alexander Chambers, Emily Ellison, Johnny Russell Jr., Larry Noble, and Andrew Curley.
Curley’s candidacy is notable given her current leadership role within the legislative branch of the Navajo Nation government, setting up a direct contest with the sitting president.
In her announcement, Curley emphasized her faith, the support of her community, and a commitment to unifying the Navajo people. She pointed to her tenure as Speaker, where she has worked on key issues including water rights, the impacts of uranium contamination, and the development of youth advisory councils.
She also pledged to prioritize the needs of Navajo citizens over political interests, defend voting rights, and protect the Nation from harmful federal policies. Her campaign centers on a message of hope and unity, calling on voters to help shape the future of the Navajo Nation.
“This was not a decision that I took lightly. I gave a lot of thought and prayer, and I turned to those who have uplifted and supported me along my journey, and I am pleased to have the support of my family, my communities, and many of you across the Navajo Nation,” Curley said.
“As your president, I will welcome our people into the office of the president and vice president. I will not put politics or my interests before the people,” she continued.
The election is scheduled for November 5, 2026, the same day as the U.S. midterm elections.
