San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation Wins Healthcare Award
Last week, the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation (SCAHC) received the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) 2026 Quality Award.
SCAHC was selected as the winner of the Workforce Engagement Award in the 25 beds or less classification for its submission, “Flourishing as a new nurse in rural Arizona: Gozhǫǫ in nursing at Izee֙ Baa Gowąh.” The award ceremony was held in Tucson and was part of the 2026 Arizona Hospital Leadership Conference.
“Rural hospitals face unique challenges within the healthcare industry, especially with the recruitment and retention of nurses and other healthcare professionals,” Victoria Began, CEO of SCAHC, said in a statement. “We’re honored to be recognized by AzHHA for the work we have done to support our nursing team.”
AzHHA’s Workforce Engagement Award recognizes healthcare facilities that have implemented thoughtful initiatives that have resulted in improved clinical workflows, workforces, and processes. Recipients were selected based on the positive influence the programs had on care delivery, staff engagement, and clinical relationships.
SCAHC’s winning program, Transition to Practice, is an enhanced preceptor-based program. According to a press release, it has improved confidence and competence for new nurses, expanded workforce development opportunities, and created a sustainable pipeline of nurses prepared to serve the San Carlos Apache community.
“We don’t just want our nurses to work in San Carlos; we want them to flourish,” Began said. “Our initiative has supported our nurses as they make meaningful connections to patients, find purpose in giving back to our tribal community, and grow as respected professionals.”
