Shinnecock Indian Nation Receives Nearly $1 Million EPA Grant for Environmental Cleanup

Overview:

A Tribe received a large award from the EPA to strengthen their environmental stewardship over their lands and surrounding areas.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation has been awarded more than $950,000 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through its Brownfields Assessment Grant Program, funding that will support environmental assessment, cleanup planning, and community engagement across Shinnecock Territory and neighboring areas.

The grant will allow the Nation to evaluate potential brownfield sites throughout Southampton, Hampton Bays, and Shinnecock lands, including abandoned residences, beach properties, historic dump sites, and wetlands. It will also fund community engagement efforts and future redevelopment planning aligned with the Nation’s environmental and cultural priorities.

The Nation’s Council of Trustees credited Environmental Director Shavonne Smith and her department for years of advocacy behind the award.

“We are incredibly proud of Shavonne Smith and her team for their dedication and perseverance,” the Council said in a statement. “This award reflects years of hard work, strategic planning, and steadfast advocacy on behalf of our Nation. Their commitment to protecting our homeland and advancing environmental stewardship continues to create meaningful opportunities for our community.”

Council leaders described the funding as more than financial support, calling it recognition of the department’s sustained work to protect Shinnecock lands, waters, and natural resources while pursuing sustainable development for future generations.

The Council specifically acknowledged the support of Congressman Nick LaLota, whose engagement with the Nation has helped advance shared regional priorities.

Moving forward, the Council said it remains focused on protecting community health, preserving ancestral lands, and building environmental resilience.
