The White House announced Friday that President Donald Trump will hold a political rally in Durant, Oklahoma, which is located within the Choctaw Nation, next Thursday, October 1.
With polls showing the beleaguered second-term president facing falling support, Trump has embarked on a campaign tour to support Republican candidates in various parts of the country. Thursday’s rally is in support of Republican nominee for Oklahoma governor Mike Mazzei, a former Oklahoma state senator and Tulsa businessman.
While the rally is scheduled to be held at the Choctaw Nation Event Center in Durant, the Choctaw Nation said Friday that it is not endorsing any candidates or hosting the rally. The Trump 47 Committee is hosting the political rally.
Choctaw Nation Chief Gary Batton issued a statement welcoming Trump to the Choctaw Nation and said he hopes the presidential visit provides an opportunity for Trump to learn more about tribal sovereignty.
“This is the third time we have had the honor of a sitting U.S. president coming to the Choctaw Nation, and we welcome President Trump. We hope his visit provides an opportunity to learn more about what we do as a sovereign nation for our members and for all people in southeast Oklahoma,” Batton said.
The Choctaw Nation was visited by President Barack Obama in 2015, while President Theodore Roosevelt visited in 1905.
The Choctaw Nation’s location in southeastern Oklahoma is in close proximity to Texas, where a contentious Senate race is underway. A poll released Friday by Texas Public Opinion Research shows Democrat James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton, 49% to 44%.
Doors for Thursday’s rally are scheduled to open at 2 p.m., with the program beginning at 6 p.m. Central time.
